Perrin / Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Chateau de Beaucastel 2010

Lobenberg: Beaucastel verfährt noch immer nach dem vom Urvater Jacques erfundenen Verfahren, in dem die zu 100 % entrappten Beeren durch ein Rohr gepumpt werden, das mit einem 80 Grad heißen Wassermantel umschlossen ist. Kurz danach wird das ganze mit 20 Grad wieder zurückgekühlt. Das tötet die Enzyme ab, die für die Oxidation zuständig sind und hilft am Ende weniger Schwefel benutzen zu müssen. Beaucastel schwefelt dementsprechend geringer als fast alle anderen Weingüter. Des Erfinder der Methode war der legendäre Jacques Perrin, der auch die Weinbergsarbeit auf biologische Arbeit umstellte (inzwischen biodynamisch). Auch im Keller wird möglichst wenig gemacht, große Holzfässer, kein umpumpen oder Abzug zwischendurch, Verbleib auf der Feinhefe, selbst im anfänglichen Gärvorgang wird nur eine minimale Remontage durchgeführt. Alles extrem natürlich und minimalistisch. 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise und der Rest diverse verschiedene Reben. Wie oben erwähnt komplett entrappt vor der Vergärung. Syrah und Mourvedre werden in großen Holzfässern vergoren und die anderen in Zementtanks, der spätere Ausbau dann komplett in großen Holzfudern. Die alkoholische und die malolaktische Vergärung wird noch in den Vergärbehältern durchgeführt, danach wird umgepumpt in große, alte 5.000l Holzfässer. Die Weine verbleiben hier ohne jede weitere Bearbeitung bis zur endgültigen, unfiltrierten Abfüllung. Grandiose Nase, schwarzfruchtig, Garrigue, sehr mineralisch, Veilchen, Lakritz, Brombeere, Maulbeere, satte reife dunkle Pflaume, Schokolade, kubanische Tabake, extrem fein und lang und geschliffen. Sattes weiches Tannin steigt in die Nase, alles mild, alles extrem duftig. Im Mund ebenfalls starke Lakritztöne, auch hier wieder Veilchen, blumig, rassig, viel Salz, Steinmehl, Holunder, Johannisbrot, geflämmtes Fleisch, sattes und zugleich ultrafeines, total geschliffenes und poliertes Tannin. Gute Rasse, aber nicht zu hoch in der Säure, insgesamt tolle Balance zeigend, überhaupt nicht der von dem Jahrgang erwartete Blockbuster, sondern ein feiner, langer Beaucastel, der sicherlich zum Besten gehört, was Beaucastel bisher erzeugt hat. Ähnelt erstaunlicherweise in diesem Jahr in der Stilistik dem Clos des Papes, ohne jedoch im allerobersten Bereich ganz an dessen immense Mineralität und Rasse heranzureichen, trotzdem ein großartiger Wein, der mit an der Spitze des Jahrgangs steht. Der Nachhall ist immens, fast 2 Minuten, und der Wein bleibt dabei immer elegant und harmonisch, dennoch zugleich fast extreme Mineralität. Der ungefähr 2005 eingeleitete Stilwechsel bei Beaucastel durch die separate Vinifikation der Reben und der Parzellen und dem entsprechend besseren Blending zum Schluss, hat eine deutliche Hinwendung zur Eleganz, zur Offenheit, zur Feinheit gebracht, die Rustikalität der früheren berühmten Jahre 89/90 wich der Balance und der Feinheit und der Finesse. Beaucastel steht heute für extreme Eleganz und sauberen Fruchteindruck, gar nichts Bäuerliches mehr, kein Stall, kein Brettanomyceseinfluss. Der Beaucastel 2010 stellt den vorläufigen Höhepunkt dieses neuen Stils extrem feiner Chateauneufs dar. Das Gegenteil von manch überfetten, hochgeputschten Weinen. Ein richtig traumhaft feiner Trinkwein. 98-99/100

Parker: Interestingly enough, even though many of the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections from the southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do. As I said last year, the Perrin family is a large one indeed, with brothers Jean-Pierre and Francois sitting at the top of the hierarchy and their four sons, Mathieu, Pierre, Thomas and Marc increasingly taking charge of their negociant business and their extensive estates throughout Southern Rhone. Now controlling over 1200 acres, as well as having a network of contracts, this operation is the equivalent of a major Southern Rhone train operating at high speed. Moreover, they are doing some incredible work in all price ranges. Other 2011s that the Perrin boys have produced include the following wines, which were very good across the board, especially for 2011s. In particular, readers need to take a hard look at their estate in Vinsobres, which is making the finest wines of that appellation, and more recently, what they are doing in Gigondas with the estate they purchased there, Clos des Tourelles. These are special wines. There are now three cuvees of Gigondas from the Perrins - the Gigondas La Gille, the Gigondas Vieilles Vignes and the Gigondas Clos des Tourelles. All three merit serious attention. Tasting the 2010s, which were all set to go into bottle right after my visit, certainly shows that this vintage is impressive, although I'm not sure that Marc and Pierre Perrin haven't done as good a job with their selections in 2011. Three cuvees of Gigondas look to all have outstanding potential and will probably be in bottle by the time this report is published. 96/100 (2012)

Suckling: Stunning nose, in which deep red-fruit character is married to meaty, spicy and caramel aromas. Powerful and very well structured, the tannins still very present, but the overwhelming impression is of elegance. Very long, dry finish with plenty of stony minerality. Gives a very good idea of the direction that the best 2020s will take. From organically grown grapes. 96/100 (2022)

Wine Spectator: Dark, dense and very closed now, this has a tremendous core of crushed plum, linzer torte and blackberry confiture waiting in reserve. Ample singed cedar and mesquite, warm paving stone and black tea notes lurk in the background and glide through the finish. Features serious grip, but wonderful integration. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2035. 7,500 cases made, 4,500 cases imported. 96/100 (2013)

Falstaff: Kräftiges Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, breitere Randaufhellung. Einladendes dunkles Waldbeerkonfit, zart florale Nuancen, reife Herzkirschen, mit zart rauchiger Kräuterwürze und kandierten Orangenzesten unterlegt. Saftig, extraktsüße Pflaumenfrucht, feine Tannine, frisch strukturiert, verfügt über gutes Trinkanimo, bleibt lange haften, bereits gut balanciert, reife Kirschen im Nachhall, delikate Frucht auch im Rückgeschmack, bereits antrinkbar, sicheres Entwicklungspotenzial. 95/100 (2013)

Wine Enthusiast: The 2010 Beaucastel is a tour de force, brilliantly combining espresso and black olive notes with bright raspberry fruit, while dark earthy notes provide a solid base. The feel on the palate is ample, with tannins that are a bit dusty but not tough or chewy. The long, mouthwatering finish bodes well for the future. 96/100 (2015)

Jeff Leve: Full, rich, meaty, spicy, earthy, peppery red fruits with herbs are all over the place here in the nose and on the palate. Splash decanted , the wine easily shows off its layers of ripe, peppery, dark red fruits with the touch of a bouquet garni. This is drinking quite well now and I expect it to improve over the next few years. 95/100 (2022)
